Daniel Pink's Book... And My Thoughts on It.
Firstly, I was really surprised by my interest in the book. I didn't feel like it was something I'd go back and read again, but I did enjoy the things he said though I felt he was a little redundant toward the middle of the book.
Like I said at the beginning of this blog, I am not really a NEW MEDIA type of gal. But, I suppose that after this class, and with the reading of Pink's book... I've come around a little and have found myself becoming more and more interested in the new ways of thinking.
In fact, I've even decided to incorporate some of these ideas into my other work, which is usually really traditionally based.
I enjoyed his style of writing, mostly because it is much like my own. It was very "stream of consciousness" ish and I really liked the way the book flowed, though as I've sai before, I did feel some of it was a little drawn out at parts.
His activities in the last few chapters were actually really inspiring and helped me to think in different ways about the objects around me, especially the activity we did for homework in which I had to go through the things I owned and actually think about what I like about them and how they effect me and how I feel about them.

The Start Of a Wonderful Friendship...
i've recently discovered a new exciting thing that i didn't know i liked...
stop motion animation!
so, for my final project, that is what i am doing...
i wanted to use the idea of "collection"
i seem to collect little trinkets, which represent people, feelings and times from my past.
my collection of these things seems to grow as i do and whenever i go through my room i am pleasantly greeted with small boxes full of these little objects.
i wanted to show the process of finding these "objects from the past"
so here's a few shots from my video : )

moyra
davey.
i cannot say that i particularly enjoy this type of work.
what i can say however is that i appreciate it.
the only peice by her that i actually grasped and was somewhat inspired by was the piece called "copperheads".
it not only shows her seemingly obsessive nature, but also touches upon (for me anyways) the idea that we take advantage of a lot.
pennies for instance.
who actually thinks about pennies? no one.
they sit in the bottom of your purse/jeans/coat pockets and wait...
to either be tussled around loudly in the dryer, never to be seen again,
or on rare occasion be dropped into a pig-shaped vessle for possible later use.
she, however brings new life and beauty to pennies.
she makes them into their own works of art. each penny different in color, texture and clarity of image. each penny changed by it's previous owners. her photography is equally as successful as her subject matter. and if i had to pick one piece from today to have in my own collection, it would probably be those pennies.
gives a whole new meaning to "keep the change"
other than that, i really didn't like the other work.
the "news" video in the "couchy" area of the room was kind of annoying and loud and distracting.
the video in the little room by moyra was off-putting and uncomfortable, though i did enjoy the dark room.
but it kind of made me feel like i was watching her read an essay in front of a class. which i never thought of to be interesting or professional.
but like i said the first day of class. i'm really not into new media. i find it hard to understand and even harder to create.
thank you for taking us, though.

a whole new mind: chapter cinco
as i thought, much more interesting things happen in this chapter.
i thoroughly enjoy the little mind exercises and tried a couple, besides the homework assignment.
found myself inspired, surprisingly.
which was nice, because it is not often that i am inspired by classroom books.
the idea of "story" is extremely enticing.
i love there to be some sort of story in my work and to read about this being an underlying theme for many people is comforting. i'm not necessarily about some epic lesson or message in my work, but i do like a bit of narrative.
looking forward to upcoming chapters.
sorry my posts are late.
they somehow got into my "draft" folder thingy and i didn't realize this until today.
chapter sies soon to come.

a whole new mind: chapter cuatro
i found myself kind of bored during this chapter.
i think though, after reading chapter five, from what i hear, that things look up.
it just seems like pink is dragging on and i found myself nodding off a bit.

don't get me wrong, this subject intrests me, this chapter just seemed a little boring to me.
but i am looking forward to reading the next few chapters, as they seem a little less dry.
thanks for reading.

presentation review: sam easterson
sam easterson
by: meridith and gina.
did the presentation hold my attention?
by: meridith and gina.
did the presentation hold my attention?
actually, i found this presentation really interesting. i love the website. it's very simple and the presentation continued this theme, lots of videos and less talking. just enough talking to keep me paying attention.
do i have a clear understanding of the artist's work from the presentation?
yes, the artist's work is very clear, and very interesting. i don't like that he has to attach cameras to animals, but... as long as he's not hurting them, he's only spreading information, which is something i am never against. the point of view of animals is really interesting and teaches us about how they live and go about their day. i also like how he has connections to more scientific things, like the "animal planet" because this crosses, and even melds a line. of course it's still art. of course he's still creating something aesthetic and thought provoking. the two words are not as far away from eachother as we think.
would this presentation work for any audience?
i think if it was tweaked a little, but not much. his work is universal. nearly everyone thinks about where animals go and how they react to the world and each other when we're not around. little children would enjoy his work and as long as meridith and gina included a lot of videos, kept the droning down (which they did 'thanks') and the lights were on i think that yes, this could work for anyone.

a whole new mind: chapter tres
i liked this chapter, it was really interesting.
i really liked the comparison between IQ and EQ
and how they talked about the SATs.
because i, personally had a lot of trouble with them
and it's because i am not a fact regurgitating machine.
when i learn things, i keep the most important pieces of them up in my head.
BUT this is not true for formulas and equations. somehow those things just kind of
dissipate after a day.
it's so true that our country is coming into a conceptual age now.
you can see it everywhere you go.
the jobs that used to make the most money are not in demand, so the pay doesn't seem as good.
and now the jobs like design and art related jobs and 'empathy' related jobs like nursing and health care
are rising up from the bottom.
us artsy, funny, caring people are the new leaders of america.
that's what i got from this chapter
i look forward to the next six chapters.

html. very confused.
whenever i open anything in the window it still has all the text in it.
this is very disappointing.
am i doing something wrong?
this is very disappointing.
am i doing something wrong?
a whole new mind: chapter dos.
i found this chapter really interesting.
it's weird to think about how much our world really is changing and how right siders
are becoming more and more important and accepted.
it used to be so looked down upon to go to art school
or pursue an artistic/creative career. and now it
seems like it's more accepted and even looked up upon.
we're becoming so much more creatively driven as a people.
clothing designers, architects and web designers are so important to us as a people now.
and it was never like that twenty, even ten years ago.
now you can do what makes you happy and be successful
whereas in earlier years, in order to be successful you had to go to school for eight years
and rack in a hundred thousand to be looked up at,
now that our minds and outlooks are changing,
so too is the standard of success
many people lead happy, bountiful lives creating, instead of regurgitating facts and
percentages and formulas.
we've gone from a "baking" way of life
where everything is according to a certain recipe that you either remember or write down
to a "cooking" way of like where it's now more about flavor and
originality.
no one needs to puke up facts, but instead find ways to bend the quota and make it their own.
anyways. that's what i got from the reading this week.

two/two.
kimsoojahttp://www.kimsooja.com/recent_projects.html
i looooove this woman's work.
and i don't usually like new media type stuff.
but for some reason i am drawn to this particular piece, called...
to breathe/ respirate.
it's kind of meditational.
and therapeutic.
and hypnotizing.
along with this piece she has many other videos,
here's some info i found on her at her site
kimsooja.com
born in teuga korea.
currently lives and is working in NewYork
between 1980 and 1984 she was a Graduate Painting Major of Hong-IK University Graduate school, Seoul
between 1984 and 1985 she was at the Lithography studi at Ecole Natianl Superieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris, France
then from 1992-1993 she was an artist in residence at P.S.1 Museum in NewYork
and between 1998 and 1999 she was a World Views artist in residence at the World Trade Center in New York.
her work in mesmerizing and inspiring.
i like what she does because it is so far away from my own work in so many ways, yet we do have some similarities.
her use of color is very strong, as is my own. and this is another reason i connect with her.
one/two.

carlos amorales
"works with a range of different cultural values which he continually relates to his Mexican origin. Amorales’ series of performances are contemporary rituals. His major performance project with traditional Mexican wrestlers was exhibited in, amongst other venues, the Centre Pompidou in Paris; his Mexican Maquiladora project was initiated in the Migros Museum in Zürich, and his Devil Dance performance, by which he imper was exhibited for the first time at the last Berlin Biennial.
In the Dutch Pavilion Amorales will construct a Mexican maquiladora, a small workshop in which parts of shoes are being made. Maquiladoras are usually low-cost production units for the US market. Amorales juxtaposes this Mexican icon with Western reality. The central element is some 110 pairs of ceramic shoes, shelved in a regimented fashion and reflecting minimalist aesthetics."

video project: reactions
i liked doing the video.
and as i've said before i'm not the digital type, so it's hard for me to enjoy doing these things,
but i had fun with it and was able to create something pretty cool.
it was especially interesting thinking up things to say in the video.
things that i'd want myself to know.
and mix those in with my partner's.
in the end we ended up using more of hers than mine and i think it came out pretty good.
a little humorous and a little philosophical.
the video camera was fully charged, a plus.
and we didn't have any trouble with the filming.
it all went pretty smoothly.
not much else to say i suppose.
it was fun.
i'd do it again.
maybe a little differently, but not much.

can someone ...
tell me the website for this class... it never seems to work for me,
and i think i may be typing it in wrong.
thank you.

a whole new mind. chapter uno.
i really enjoyed the first chapter of this book a whole new mind.
firstly, i've always been somewhat interested in the brain and it's workings,
so this chapter was especially enlightening and entertaining.
i like how it's written, in a sort of sarcastic, comedic way without being
overly rediculous.
i had always know the fact about the right side of the brain controling the left side of the body and vise versa,
but i liked how the author talked about it here.
it just seems more interesting i suppose because of the over-all tone of the book.
i was intrigued, as well by the fact that not only do our separate hemispheres control different parts of our body, but our personality and mindset, too. someone who is more emotional and feeling driven, is probably more likely using the right side of their brain.
while a more organized, step by step person is using their left side.
it's really awesome to learn about all these things in a class which is driven by the right said or the brain.
our creative, more open minded ways as artists play into this whole thing and it's really great to read about.
i didn't know the exact logistics of the machinery which is used to test and look at the brain, so i learned a lot about that.
over all, i am really enjoying the book and look forward to reading more of it.

responce to aspects videos.
my feelings and interpretations of the videos varied.
for some i enjoyed them, cherished the little things which happened in them.
others annoyed, confused and even angered me.
the first video where the woman draws on herself in the series of
video camera, projection and mirroring
was very intriguing.
i found her both captivating and inspiring.
in contrast, the video with the animation of the
childlike, animated, painted, trippy, messy
badly organized, end of days type area
was obnoxious.
gave me a headache.
didn't enjoy it at all.
the other videos;
the bird video was very cute and more humorous
after i learned the real meaning in the commentary.
the video with the robot and man
was confusing at first,
but turned out very interesting and
became very eye opening to me as it ended.
all in all i did like the different videos
like i said, i'm not the digital type,
but i do like watching and interacting with other's digital work.
hopefully i can learn more about all these digital things.
and up my skills : )

new media art. let's discuss...
new media art to me...
well, i have to say, firstly that i'm not the digital type.
i enjoy looking at and do appreciate the new age and ways of art making,
but find it difficult to express myself through digital media.
new media art has many definitions
and as with traditional art making.
it's hard to ACTUALLY define.
video, computer manipulation
and sound manipulation come to mind.
as well as digital animation and
digital photography.
it's the new way of expression.
taking traditional ideas and
using new techniques
in our digital, computing world
to express the same thought processes.
yup, well that's all i got for that one.
enjoy : )
